Local governments have reached a tentative agreement that keeps York County in the regional library system as a nonvoting member, paying a cost proportional to what it pays for its own library system.
The city of Williamsburg made the announcement in a press release this morning.
All York County residents will have card privileges at the library, which will be renamed from the Williamsburg Regional Library to the Greater Williamsburg Regional Library.
Williamsburg City Council and the boards of supervisors of James City and York counties will be voting to approve the new agreement at their meetings this month.
Under the agreement York County, which was assessed $890,000 as its share of library costs this year, will pay one fifth of what it spends on its own York County library system. The York budget this year is $5.286 million.
James City County, which has the majority of users and pays most of the library costs, will have a majority of seven seats out of 11 on the board. Williamsburg will have four members, and York County will have one nonvoting member.
The new agreement also doubles the amount local governments agree to pay for regional investments, from $50,000 to $100,000.
