Williamsburg City Council unanimously approved a new contract Thursday to remain in what will be known next year as the Greater Williamsburg Regional Library.

City leaders also unanimously approved the first tranche of a financing package for the city’s new $37.2 million downtown library, projected to be completed by August of 2028. The city will borrow $15 million at 4.39% interest from Raymond James and shift $5 million earmarked in its capital plan for a live performance venue to use in the library project.

“I’m glad (the new library agreement) has finally come to fruition,” said Council member Stacy Kern-Scheerer.

The new five-year regional library agreement would include the city as well as James City and York counties.
