January 20
Citizens had the opportunity to comment on the proposed budgets for the Williamsburg-James City County school district and York County tonight during two separate public hearings. The W-JCC School Board is seeking input on a spending plan that includes significant requests for teacher pay raises and new support positions, while York County supervisors are looking at a budget shaped by rising costs and infrastructure needs. read complete story

Williamsburg-James City County school officials are considering a proposal to stop covering expensive weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic for employees to help bridge a $5.1 million budget gap. The district’s health insurance fund has seen a massive spike in claims for GLP-1 prescriptions, accounting for nearly half of its health insurance expense. read complete story

A man died in a house fire in the First Colony subdivision Wednesday night, the James City County fire department announced. Firefighters were called to the 100 block of The Maine around 7:45 p.m. for a residential structure fire. read complete story

The National Weather Service has upgraded its winter weather advisory to a warning for the Historic Triangle, as a mix of freezing rain and sleet is expected to move into the area Saturday night. Forecasters are warning that ice accumulation on tree limbs and power lines could lead to scattered outages and hazardous travel conditions into next week read complete story
