The committee reviewing redistricting for Williamsburg-James City County schools is sticking to the changes they laid out in August.

At the school board work session Tuesday, the 19-person group unanimously recommended School Superintendent Daniel Keever accept that draft and submit it to the school board for final approval Oct. 20.

The attendance zones are on the county’s redistricting web page.

As laid out, the new attendance zones will impact 16% of the school population during the 2027-2028 academic year, according to the committee. About 17% of elementary school students, 25% of middle school students and 6% of high school students will change schools, the committee reported.

The redistricting effort required schools to balance sometimes competing goals of making sure school buildings were fully utilized without overcrowding; demographics were balanced; neighborhood schools were maintained with a minimum impact on students, bus rides were minimized and students stayed together through the grades.

After the redistricting recommendation was made, another group that has been working concurrently laid out its roadmap for communicating and managing the changes to students, families and staff.
