Correction: We published an incorrect chart of school by school results in our initial report, placing Waller Mill Elementary School in the WJCC school system rather than York. We also updated some of the school by school comparisons that were incorrectly listed for several schools. We regreat the error.
James City County police say they have received hundreds of complaints over the past two years from parents and school police about kids illegally buying nicotine and THC vapes at local vape shops.
Last week police raided two shops that were within 1,000 feet of schools – Super Tobacco and Vape on Richmond Road in Toano and King J Tobacco & Vape on John Tyler Highway in Five Forks -- and confiscated THC and marijuana products. They arrested a clerk at each store.
It was the second drug bust at King J in two years.
Detective Joshua Ernst, who is investigating the two shops, said police seized “hundreds of products per store” that he said were being illegally and openly sold on the wall behind the sales counter.
Police and the Tri-Rivers Drug Task Force previously raided King J in January of 2024 and seized several pounds of marijuana and highly potent THC, arresting one employee.
