Labor leader files paperwork to run against Sen. Danny Diggs in 2027

The election for the Historic Triangle’s Virginia Senate District 24 seat is more than a year off, but a prominent state labor official has already filed to run against incumbent Republican Sen. J.D. “Danny” Diggs.
Diggs, who left a 45-year career in law enforcement-- including Sheriff for York County and Poquoson -- narrowly defeated Democrat Monty Mason by one percentage point in 2023.
Jason Parker, the president of the Virginia State Building and Construction Trades Council, has filed paperwork to run against Diggs in the November 2027 election.
The Virginia Scope political newsletter first reported the news.
Scope also reported potential interest in the race from Del. Mark Downey, who defeated Republican incumbent Chad Green to take the 69th district in the House of Delegates this year. We did not have time to hear from Downey before our deadline.
Parker is also the secretary-treasurer of the Virginia AFL-CIO, according to the union. He also serves as secretary-treasurer of the Hampton Roads Building and Construction Trades Council and Vice President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1340 in Newport News.
