James City County supervisors scheduled a public hearing Tuesday on one of three development projects that could add 1,865 more homes to the county --on top of 7,000 homes that have already been approved over the past few years but not yet built.

Representatives of the developers for the three projects have pushed back their hearings several times over the past year as they worked to round up support from the five supervisors.

Tuesday’s hearing will be on the Westwood Park project planned on surplus Eastern State Hospital land. The project, which would be adjacent to New Town, would include 82 single family homes and 57 townhouse and apartment units, plus 24,000 square feet of commercial space.

Another project slated on the surplus land, Cardinal Ridge, is slated for a hearing Sept. 8. Cardinal Ridge is the largest of the two projects planned on the surplus hospital property and would add 1,006 homes.

On Oct. 13, the supervisors will consider the third project, The Bluffs at Kiskiack, which envisions 704 homes including senior housing, a museum, an office park, hotel and retail spaces off I-64 in Croaker.

Approximately 7,000 other homes have been approved in the past and have not been built, but could go up whenever their developers wish, county officials said.
