Car thefts, break-ins on rise in James City County, police warn

James City County police warned Wednesday that car theft and vandalism is rising in the county. But they said there are steps you can take to protect yourself.
“They’re not just tugging on door handles anymore – they’re breaking windows.” said Detective Jesse Harmon.
Harmon said the incidents are spreading throughout the region and are no longer limited to unlocked vehicles or cars whose owners leave valuables in plain sight.
“We’ve seen an increase in reports over the past several weeks,” a police spokesperson said. “While not every case involves the same circumstances, the overall trend shows more attempts to enter vehicles and a rise in related vandalism.”
Harmon said stealing vehicles is a gateway crime that is often connected to more serious offenses like transportation of narcotics and weapons, among other crimes
