Third graders’ reading and mathematics scores improved at local schools in the latest SOL tests released Tuesday. York County outperformed Williamsburg-James City County schools by double digits, including students who are considered disadvantaged.
In WJCC schools, 70.2% of third graders passed the reading test, according to test results released by the Virginia Department of Education. That was an increase of 3.52 points from the previous year’s test.
Third grade reading scores are considered critical by educators because students at that level are transitioning to reading-based learning on all subjects.
Math pass rates were even higher, at 76.94%, up by 1.51 points from the previous year.
Both scores were above the statewide third grade pass rates of 67.93% in reading and 74.13% for mathematics. The school system has set a goal of 85%.
York County schools’ third grade reading pass rates increased slightly to 85.7% and mathematics pass rates increased to 88.47%.
